What’s the difference between wedding videography and wedding cinematography?

When we began Thousand Hills Creations we were surprised when we examined the “industry standard” for wedding highlight videos. We began to notice that what we were offering was not the same as what was being promoted and marketed as wedding videography. Yes, the videos were edited, but not on the same artistic level and ability as the ones we were producing. We quickly realized that our product was above the industry standard for “videography,” so we began branding ourselves as wedding cinematographers.

The main difference between videography and cinematography is seen in the final product. While wedding videography is often associated with simple and straightforward documentation, filming a wedding with a cinematic eye will turn your wedding video into a work of art. Producing a quality wedding video that is cinematic comes from the filmmaker’s ability to visualize and shoot artistic video footage on the day of your wedding. This takes a skilled and trained eye for quickly and efficiently finding the best angles that perfectly capture each special moment. If a wedding is filmed with a trained and experienced cinematographer, the types of shots they capture will invoke a positive and delightful emotional response from the viewer.

The editing process is incredibly important, too, since the video must successfully and coherently tell the story of your wedding day in a 5-6 minute highlight video. The editor will have hours of footage to look through, so this also takes skill to choose all the best moments and angles and then to edit them together in a way that will elicit an emotional response from the viewer and tell your story in a memorable and concise way.

Thousand Hills Creations is made up of a team of three artistic filmmakers with many years of experience in several creative fields. There is definitely a need for artistry when shooting and editing film footage and we are looking to fill that need. Our experienced team is well equipped to be more than qualified to offer the bride and groom a unique video memory of their wedding day.

To better understand the process that we go through to make the wedding video truly stand far and away above the industry standard, let me introduce you to our team and the vital roles each of them play. Our head filmmakers at Thousand Hills Creations are Jody and Kirsten Hill. In addition to capturing artistic film footage of the entire wedding day, they each have their own unique talents and roles to play. Jody is our FAA-certified drone pilot. Aerial drone footage of the wedding venue is incorporated into the finished highlight video. Kirsten is our head editor. After the wedding, she spends many hours preparing the finished video as the film footage is edited and crafted into a beautiful, cinematic highlight video. She begins the process by choosing the most picturesque and relevant shots to tell the wedding-day story, along with romantic music that is a perfect match for the video highlights. As creative director, Mark oversees the entire operation to ensure quality results that will be cherished for years to come. It takes all of our talents to deliver the final product that will tell the one-of-a-kind story of your special day. Your cinematic highlight video will give you the unique opportunity to see many candid moments and the reactions and emotions of your guests. You will be proud and excited to share your wedding story with family and friends.

So, in conclusion, the biggest difference between wedding videography and cinematography is contingent upon the filmmaker’s ability to capture artistic shots that evoke an emotional response and are over and above status quo. Cinematic techniques produce an unforgettable wedding memory that only experienced wedding cinematographers can produce.
